For over a decade, the Gary Team, one of the first mechanical contractors in the Washington-Baltimore Metroplex to really dive into this technology, has recognized the benefits and impact of VRV/VRF systems on our customers and the industry as a whole. As an energy services provider, keenly aware of our clients’ needs to heat and cool their facilities in an energy efficient way, we made a corporate decision to be among the first in our area to offer, install, and properly service these new systems.
Variable refrigerant volume (VRV) or variable refrigerant flow (VRF) systems are cutting edge mechanical systems with a proven track record. While these systems are relatively new in the United States, they have been operating for three decades in Japan and are widely used in Asia, Europe and South America. The popularity of these systems has grown because they give you more control and run more efficiently than traditional HVAC systems.
In a traditional HVAC system, the system turns off when it is not needed but has to start up again every time the room needs more cooling or heating. Since starting the motor uses the most energy, every time the system comes back on in every space, a large amount of energy is being consumed and exerted. VRV/VRF systems never really turn off; they run at very low energy levels until they are needed and are then ramped up to meet the demand of the space. Ramping the system up to meet the heating or cooling needs takes much less energy than restarting the system.
Furthermore, unlike most traditional HVAC systems, one condensing unit can handle more than one evaporator, each of which can be individually controlled by its user. This is done through the use of shared refrigerant. In a heat pump run VRV/VRF system, heating or cooling can be provided to the space. In a heat recovery VRV/VRF system, heating and cooling can be provided to variable spaces at the same time. By sharing the refrigerant throughout the system, rooms that need cooling give their heat to the system that in turn uses it to heat a room that needs heating and vice versa. This means that the compressor motor has less of a load, saving significant energy and reducing the cost of ownership over a standard system.
We partner with Daikin, LG, and City Multi by Mitsubishi to learn about this new technology from the source. We have been certified by them to install and service their equipment. While each manufacturer uses similar technology, they all have different approaches to the final product. Therefore, it is imperative to have a service provider factory trained on a variety of systems. Our close relationships with these manufacturers allow us to stay current with all new service information and bulletins to ensure that your facility is running at peak efficiencies.
